But with the advent of AI, this adventure might get tasked to AI systems as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vinod Khosla, a prominent venture capitalist at Khosla Ventures, recently shared a fascinating anecdote revealing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman&#8217;s perspective on the timeline for interstellar exploration driven by self-replicating AI. Khosla said, &#8220;I said 15 years, and his answer to me was, &#8216;You&#8217;re way too conservative. It&#8217;s not something people call me very often.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Altman&#8217;s assertion that Khosla&#8217;s estimate was &#8220;way too conservative&#8221; suggests a belief that self-replicating AI probes could be venturing beyond Earth much sooner than 2037. This could exponentially accelerate the exploration of the galaxy, bypassing the limitations of traditional spacecraft that require massive resources and decades-long journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And AI systems could be better than humans at navigating the furthest reaches of space. Unlike humans, AI agents wouldn&#8217;t need food, water or oxygen to survive harsh spaceflights &#8212; they&#8217;d likely simply be powered with solar energy, and be able to sustain for arbitrarily long periods of time. It&#8217;s also possible that advanced AI systems could have longer lifespans than humans, making them ideal for visiting distant planets. And if these AI systems can self-replicate, they could end up being ideal not just for exploring space, but setting up space colonies.
